WELCOME TO VOICE CONNECTS – A VIRTUAL COMMUNITY CONNECTION PILOT

Equitable connection should not depend on geography, transportation, income, or access to a physical space.

Voice Connects is a six-month virtual community connection pilot led by Voice of Albertans with Disabilities (VAD). Running from December through May, this initiative offers 12 accessible, facilitated 90-minute virtual sessions (two per month) designed to reduce social isolation, share practical resources, and foster a strong sense of belonging among people with disabilities across Alberta.

Whether you live in an urban center, a rural area, or a remote community, Voice Connects offers a safe, consistent space where you can build relationships, learn alongside peers, and amplify your voice.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Voice Connects is a province-wide, virtual community connection pilot led by Voice of Albertans with Disabilities (VAD). Running over a six-month period from December through May, this initiative delivers 12 facilitated virtual sessions (two per month) designed to reduce social isolation, share practical knowledge, and build lasting relationships across Alberta.

Inaccessible physical spaces, transportation barriers, geographic distance, cost, digital barriers, and systemic exclusion often keep individuals with disabilities from fully participating in community life. Rural, remote, and underserved communities frequently face even fewer accessible in-person options.

Voice Connects addresses these barriers by creating a consistent, welcoming, and accessible virtual space where Albertans can build meaningful peer connections, learn about community resources, and strengthen their sense of belonging – wherever they live.

HOW IT WORKS

Format

12 virtual sessions (90 minutes each), held twice per month from December through May.

Cohort Size

A manageable cohort of 25 to 30 registered participants per session (capped at 30) to preserve meaningful interaction, accessibility, and quality engagement.

Caregivers & Attendants

May attend alongside participants.

Session Structure

Every session follows a predictable, comfortable flow including a welcome check-in, a guided topic, peer sharing, a community resource highlight, a scheduled break, and a closing reflection.

Guest Speakers

1 to 2 times per month, guest speakers share expertise on wellness, self-advocacy, disability rights, and navigating community supports.

ACCESSIBILITY & INCLUSION BY DESIGN

Accessibility is a core operating requirement, not an optional feature. We are committed to creating a space where every participant can engage comfortably and equitably:

Flexible Engagement

Participate via voice, chat, camera-on, or camera-off options—whatever works best for you.

Access Supports

Delivered on accessible virtual platforms featuring live captioning, ASL interpretation, advance topic notices, plain-language materials, and built-in breaks.

Individual Accommodation

Participants are invited to share their access needs during registration and throughout the pilot so adjustments can be made continuously.

Group Agreements

Shared agreements around respect, privacy, choice, and safety are established to ensure a welcoming environment for all.
