DEFINING ACCESSIBILITY


 

For our purposes, accessibility means the removal of barriers for people with disabilities.

 

VAD uses the Accessible Canada Act to focus our accessibility awareness and education to further the inclusions and full participation in the community. We can assist with accessibility in:

  • Employment Needs
  • The Built Environment
  • Information & Communication Technologies
  • The Procurement of Goods, Services & Facilities
  • The Design & Delivery of Programs & Services
  • Transportation Needs

TYPES OF BARRIERS


Physical

(e.g. high shelves)

Architectural

(e.g. narrow doorways)

Technological

(e.g. unreliable internet)

Attitudinal

(assumptions on someone’s capability)

Information/Communications

(e.g. unclear signage, masks)

Policies or Practices

(you must phone to make an appointment)

TYPES OF DISABILITIES


Vision

(e.g. color blindness, low vision)

Motor/Mobility

(e.g. wheelchair-user or walker concerns)

Auditory

(hearing difficulties)

Seizures

(especially photosensitive epilepsy)

Learning/Cognitive

(e.g. dyslexia, TBI)

Episodic Disabilities

(life-long conditions, such as diabetes, HIV, Cancer, and Multiple Sclerosis)

Invisible Disabilities

(Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, mental health)

Barriers can also arise for any user:

Incidental

(e.g, sleep-deprivation)

Environmental

(e.g. using a mobile device underground)
