A list of Federal and Provincial Programs to help you stay independently in your home

 

Federal Programs

 

Home Accessibility Tax Credit Like medical expenses, you can claim Home Accessibility modifications on your taxes. As of 2022 you can claim up to $20,000 -which would give a credit of up to $3,000. To be eligible you must have been eligible for the Disability Tax Credit in that year OR be 65 or older at the end of the tax year.

Disability Tax CreditIf a medical practitioner certifies that you have severe and prolonged impairment(s) you may be eligible for the Disability Tax Credit. The categories they look at are: Walking, Hearing, Vision, Dressing, Feeding, Mental Functions, Speaking, Eliminating, and Life-sustaining therapy.

In both cases above you may want to speak to your Accountant or Financial Planner.

Provincial Programs

 

Seniors’ Financial assistance Programs 6 months before you turn 65 you should receive an application in the mail. If you didn’t, you can call the Alberta Contact Supports Centre at 1-877-644-9992.

*Note, there are income thresholds to be eligible for this program, if you’re unsure call the number above.

  • Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program

Senior’s Home Adaptation and Repair program (SHARP) This is a low interest loan for eligible seniors to remain independent in their home.

Special Needs Assistance for Seniors- Eligible seniors can get funding for a variety of things ranging from health to appliances and furniture. Some highlights would include snow clearing and yard maintenance, housekeeping, home clean-up and more.

Special Needs Assistance for Seniors income thresholds

Residential Accessibility Modification Program (RAMP)Eligible Albertans can receive up to $7500 per year to get home modifications that make staying in their home easier. Eligibility is income tested. Eligible expenses include adding ramps/lifts, bathroom modifications, porch/patio modification, ceiling lifts and more.
